Ansattes ved krigen 1848 ved overkommandoen og blev anerkendt for sin indsats. Som brigadeofficer ved Dybbøl 1864 på Store Danevirke udmærkede han sig også, hvorfor han blev udnævnt til general 1867. Umidlertid blev han året efter kritiseret af sine undergivne for sin føring af slagene ved Dybbøl, og sagen. der synes at have rod i at han havde indstillet en oberst til afsked, gav anledning til lange debatter i folketinget.
