I am looking for information about the jewish family: ROTHENBURG, ROTHENBORG, ROTENBERG in Germany (Hamburg/Altona) and Denmark (primarily Copenhagen) in the 17th-18th century. Especially, I am interested in finding the family of Regine Rose ?, married to 4. Moses Behrendt ROTHENBORG (cf. table below).
This is, so far, all I know:
1. Mordechaj Süsskind ROTHENBURG [1]. Born probably 1630-40 (in Witzenhausen?). Dead after 1714 probably in Altona or Hamburg. Rabbi in Witzenhausen, Grodno (Lithuania), Posen (=Poznan, Poland), Lublin (Poland). Wrote memorandum together with his son Moses Ber R. (see below). Spouse unknown. One certain child:
2. Moses Ber ROTHENBURG. Born about 1665. Dead 12 Jan 1712 in Altona. Rabbi in Tykoczin, Brest-Litovesk and Altona (here together with Zebi Hirsch Ashkenazi = Hakam Zebi, maybe his brother-in-law). Chief rabbi in Altona 1710. Wrote memorandum "Scháloth Uteschuboth" together with his father (published Hamburg 1716 and NOT Amsterdam 1746 as stated in e.g. Jewish Encyclopedia, 1907). Married to Rechle FÜRST (of the well-known FÜRST family in Berlin, Dessau and Hamburg) who as widow 1739 emigrated to Copenhagen together with her son Behrendt Moses (see below). Here, she died 15 Mar 1752. They had at least three (a-c), maybe four (+d) children:
a) Behrendt Moses ROTHENBURG (see below).
b) [daughter], married to Jacob LANDAU of Lubartow. Their daughter
Chana, married to Isaac of Lubartow (1730-94). According to Rosenstein
(The Unbroken Chain, Shengold Publishers 1976, p. 392), this daughter
was Rabbi Moses Rothenburgs "only child". It must be
objected that the Danish Rothenborg familys relations to the rabbi are absolutely
unequivocal thanks to the tombstones of the rabbis widdow and son in Copenhagen
(cf. Salomon, J. & J. Fischer (red.): Mindeskrift i Anledning af 100-års-dagen
for Anordningen af 29. marts 1814, Copenhagen 1914, p. 171).
c) Chana ROTHENBURG, married to Garbriel of Lobatchov (Lubartow?).
Descendants: among others Schlomo (Salomon) KLUGER (1785-1869),
rabbi in Brody.
d) Mordechaj ROTHENBORG (or Marcus Moses LEVY), Born about
1700, married to Hanne LEVY. Descendants: The Danish LEVY family,
maybe the Dänisch EIBESCHÜTZ family [2],
ROTHENBURG-ALTER,
the founder of the Ger Chassidic Dynasty [3].
3. Behrendt Moses ROTHENBURG. Born probably in Hamburg/Altona. Dead 21 Jul 1775 in Copenhagen. Got 15 Mar 1752 Royal Danish Licence to trade ("Kgl. Lejdebrev") in Copenhagen. Married to his cousin Beile FÜRST (of the FÜRST/GOLDSCHMIDT family). She died 18 Aug 1774 in Copenhagen. At least three children:
a) Moses Behrendt ROTHENBORG, see below.
b) Hanne ROTHENBURG. Dead February 2nd 1776 in Copenhagen.
Married to Israel Moses ISRAEL (1733-1813, also called "Jechiel Präger", i.e. must have
been from Prague). Four children.
c) Heyman Behrendt ROTHENBORG, buried 13th of August 1779
in Copenhagen (probably about 40 years old). Otherwise unknown.
4. Moses Behrendt ROTHENBORG. Born 1735 in Hamburg/Altona. Dead 10 Nov. 1787 in Copenhagen. Jewish merchant. Married to Regine Rose ?. Surname unknown, parents unknown!!!. Dead 12. Jun 1804 in Copenhagen. In the 1801 census, she is registered "Regina Rodenborg" at Øster Kvarter 34,81 in Kopenhagen together with her two sons, apparently being in no need in spite of her widowhood. Her unusual first name combination may be due to a tradition of her family which I believe can belong to the circle round the (wealthy) FÜRSTs and GOLDSCHMIDTs in Hamburg/Altona/Copenhagen [4]. In my records, I also have Rose Regine Goldschmidt, daughter of Meyer "Kik" Goldschmidt (1740-98), son of Aron Bendix Goldschmidt (-1742) and Röschen Regine Fürst (-1784). At least three children:
a) Liebe ROTHENBORG. Born about 1777, dead 1849. Married to
Philip VON ESSEN (merchant, born about 1770). One son. Otherwise
unknown.
b) Behrendt ROTHENBORG. Born about 1778. Died 8 Apr 1809 in Copenhagen.
Merchant. Otherwise unknown.
c) Philipp Moses ROTHENBORG. Born 1783 in Copenhagen. Dead 30 Jun
1840 in Copenhagen. Tea merchant. Married to Frederikke ADLER (Danish/German
jewish Family). My GGG-Grandparents.

According to a theory put forward by J. Fischer, there is a direct line
from 1. Mordechaj Süsskind ROTHENBURG
to Rabbi Meier ben Baruch, "Maharam Rothenburg", who 1286 was arrested
by the Emperor Rudolf and died in prison 1293 in Ensisheim, buried 1307
in Worms. The line consists of (all rabbies): Baruch, Meier, Suesskind,
Getschlik, Meier, Mordechaj, Abraham, Ejakim, Mordechaj (or Süsskind,
born 1559), and Moses who according to the theory is the father of Mordechaj
Süsskind. The theory is build on a book by M. Pinner "Grabschriften
der berühmtesten Männer und Rabbiner in Europa und im heiligen
Lande, nebst Catalog von 389 hebr. Drücken und Handschriften" which
I have been unable to trace. According to a reader of soc.genealogy.jewish,
the theory is confirmed in contemporary rabbinical works. I wellcome other
comments on this theory.
[2] Sara (Serle) Levi (ca. 1740-1820),
married to Aron Eibeschütz (ca. 1736-1812, wine dealer, first ancestor
of the Danish Eibeschütz family), maybe a daughter of Mordechaj
Rothenburg. There are apparently no relationship
between Aron Eibeschütz and Jonathan Eybeschütz of Hamburg.
[3] Response
from a reader of the newsgroup soc.genealogy.jewish (thanks!):"Mordechaj
Sueskind ROTHENBURG had another son Shlomo Rothenburg of Ladowa. One of
Shlomo's sons was Mordechai Rotenberg of Gonishov and Vaidislav. Mordechai's
son was Israel Rotenberg of Gora and Gonishov. One of Israel's sons was
Isaac Meir Rotenberg-Alter, the founder of the Ger Chassidic dynasty in
Poland. This genealogy is well-known among Ger chassidim".
[4] Several people have asked me about my knowledge of
the GOLDSCHMIDT/FÜRST families, i.e. descendants of Ruben FÜRST
(Schauemburg, 16th-17th century) and of Daniel Baruch ("Stuckhart")
GOLDSCHMIDT (Witzenhausen, 17th century). To download what I have
(zipped GEDCOM-file), click [here]. NB:
Notes, titles, occupations are in Danish, sorry! Further, the GEDCOM-tag TITLE is used unconventionally as a "one-word-occupation-denoter" (e.g. "TITLE=merchant, OCCU=merchant in Hamburg/Altona, later in Copenhagen"). The file, of course, contains only selected descendants, i.e. descendants which are either a) ancestors of Philipp Moses ROTHENBORG, b) children of his ancestors, or c) collateral branches starting in the 19th-20th century. In speciel cases (e.g. cousin's marriages, relationship to Heinrich Heine, Felix Mendelsohn), other descedents occur as well. All living persons have been removed.
